Paris

My stay in Paris was very brief - no more than 10 hours from start to finish – but it left me with a lasting impression, hungry for an extended visit in the City of Lights.

I was in high school and on a group trip to Italy and Germany, but our flight back to the USA left from Paris.  All of the girls, including myself, were ecstatic that we would have at least some time to sightsee in Paris, but our journey on the German Autobahn took longer than expected, as our bus driver decided to implement his own very reasonable speed limit.

We didn’t arrive in Paris until around midnight, with our plane set to leave before 10am the next day.  Our group leader made an agreement with us: If we were in the hotel lobby by 6am, he would take us to see the Eiffel Tower. We were running on very little sleep, but how could we come home saying we were in Paris and didn’t see the Eiffel tower?

As the sun rose the next day, our group had the privilege to walk along the Seine on a chilly August morning, with the Eiffel Tower coming closer and closer into view.  We briefly paused at Notre Dame, and had just enough time to get up close to the Eiffel Tower and take a quick stroll down the Champs-Élysées.  When we looked one way, we had a great view of the Arc de Triomphe, and when we looked the other we saw the pyramid outside The Louvre in the distance.

I arrived home jet lagged that evening however, I excitedly told anyone who would listen that I stood under the Eiffel Tower that very morning.  And since then, I have been looking forward to the day I can have a lengthy stay in Paris, embracing its history and culture with a day at The Louvre, a Chateau tour on the Seine, and a romantic dinner in the Eiffel Tower.
