You’re going where to get married? How do I sign up?!?!

Brad P. - RCI Sweepstakes and Social Media News

I’ll be honest, destination weddings are not as simple as putting on a fancy outfit, hopping into your car and heading down to the ceremony or reception.  They require a bit more planning and coordination…but oh my, they can be so much fun (as well as an excuse to get away)!

My most memorable destination wedding took place on the U.S. Virgin Island of St. Thomas.  My wife and I figured that since we had to fly down from the Northeast, we might as well make a vacation out of it.  The wedding took place on a Saturday, but we went down the Sunday before the big day.  The first part of the week was spent relaxing in the sun, playing in the ocean and exploring the island.  However, the trip continued to get better and better as the week progressed.  Towards the end of the week, all of our family and friends began to arrive and we acted like locals, showing them around the resort and surrounding areas.  Then, the vacation was capped off by a fantastic wedding where close friends affirmed their eternal love for one another, and we danced well into the night on the soft white sand next to the ocean! It certainly was a memorable event that I will always remember fondly.

This week on the blog, we’ll be showcasing RCI subscribing member photos and stories about destination weddings.  If you have a memory you want to share about a wedding in a far-away place, please submit your story to the RCI blog or comment on any of the great stories or pictures.

Carlsbad, California

We just returned from a wonderful week at the Tamarack Beach Resort in Carlsbad, CA. The grounds were exceptionally nice, as were our accommodations. Our unit had a partial ocean view that was practically a full view. We could walk to most every restaurant. The beach was right across the street and very clean and clear. One day we took the train to visit Old Town. That was fun! What a wonderful relaxing time. We will definitely return to that resort.

Cabo Cabo Cabo!

Three years ago I had booked a resort for my family in Cancun, Mexico. It was the day after Christmas and we were excited about leaving snowy Salt Lake City, Utah. However, when we arrived at the airport, our plane to Cancun was overbooked so we could not all make the flight. Next to the Cancun flight gate, there was a flight leaving to Cabo San Lucas. They had seats for us! I called RCI from the airport and told them the situation. The customer service rep told me that he could switch us to a resort in Cabo without any additional charges. So all 7 of us flew to Cabo. We took a taxi to the Pueblo Bonito Resort at Sunset Beach. The porters at the resort drove us to our unit via golf carts. The resort is built on a hill overlooking the Pacific Ocean. We entered our unit and were wowed! It was a 4 bedroom Presidential Suite with the most awesome view of the ocean. On our balcony was our own hot tub. Our family had a tremendous week of fun at this beautiful resort. This resort and its staff were 5 Star. I can only say thank you RCI for helping us to experience family memories together that we will treasure forever!

I Love Cabo!

I want to tell you about Cabo! I just loved it there! I was amazed by all the cactus and foothills surrounded by the gorgeous deep blue water. The rock formations and the Arch in the Sea of Cortez are spectacular! Locals said that it only rains approximately 11 days a year. Since I live in Florida, I noticed the lack of humidity and enjoyed it immediately. It was true desert conditions, in the 80's during the day and cooled nicely each evening. This was a timeshare trade for me, staying at the RCI Gold Crown, five-star resort Pueblo Bonito Resort at Sunset Beach. The resort is situated on the Western side of the tip of Baja, on a hillside overlooking the Pacific. This spectacular getaway provides incredible views from hacienda-style villas overlooking a magnificent expanse of private beach and sparkling deep blue sea. This has to be the most fantastic resort I have ever experienced. The luxurious all-suite accommodations along with five ocean-view pools was amazing. Even though the beach there is non-swimmable because of the strong currents, walks on the beach and listening to the pounding waves was breathtaking. There is magnificent dining on property but be certain to make reservations. All the restaurants are very popular, The Spa massages and facials were relaxing and delightful. The resort provides complimentary shuttle golf carts to escort guests around the property. They also offer a shuttle bus to adjacent Pueblo Bonito Pacifica, and nearby (10 minutes) to Pueblo Bonito Los Cabos as well as Pueblo Bonito Rose where you can enjoy full use of all amenities and restaurants. These properties are adjacent to each other and are located on one of the best swimmable beaches in Los Cabos, Medano Beach. This is also near downtown and within walking distance to many shops and restaurants. Be sure to try the tortilla soup at The Office. Best I have ever tasted! And you can dine with your feet in the sand! The marina is also located nearby providing boats for diving, whale watching, deep sea fishing and glassbottom boats with boat tours for spectacular views of Lover's Beach and the Arch.

The Los Cabos International airport is approximately 45 minutes from the resort and is near the quaint town of San Jose del Cabo. I recommend arranging transportation with the resort in advance of your arrival. If you rent a car be certain to drive approximately 30 minutes up the Pacific coast to Todos Santos to visit the famed Hotel California and many other interesting shops and sights in that area.

As you can tell I definitely enjoyed Cabo and certainly recommend that you experience this destination for your next vacation. The people are extremely friendly and accommodating and do everything possible to make your vacation a wonderful memory!

So much to do in St. Maarten

Mark K. - Travel Stories and RCI NewsLast summer, my wife and I, along with another couple, planned a vacation to St. Maarten for a week of sun and relaxation on the beach. We decided to go during July, which is considered their “off season,” so it was nice and quiet. We stayed at the Atrium Beach Resort and Spa, located right on Simpson Bay and close to everything!

St. Maarten is a beautiful island with lots to do, see and experience. One day, we went around the island to the various towns and beaches to shop and eat. Another day, we went ocean kayaking to a beach close to our resort. At that beach, there was an outdoor bar with live music. There was even free Wi-Fi, so I was able to get onto the internet from my phone. It was nice to check back into civilization every so often!

In my opinion, the one thing you must do when you visit St. Maarten is go to the famous Maho Beach.  This is the beach where the planes fly so close to it, it looks like you can touch them. Located next to this beach is an outdoor restaurant where you can sit, order food and watch the planes fly in.  People we spoke to there had spent hours sitting and watching.

After spending 7 days on the island there was still so much to do. I’m looking forward to my next trip back! To learn more about St. Maarten, check out this article from the North America version of Endless Vacation® magazine. Or, come back to the RCI Blog this week, where you can read stories and see photos from RCI subscribing members who have traveled to this amazing island. Trust me, these photos are incredible and really make me want to plan my next trip back.

Bahamas 1994

We were pleasantly surprised to get a 3-bedroom/3-bath unit at the Ocean Reef Yacht Club & Resort in Freeport. With all that space, we were able take my wife's mother and sister. We each had our own bedrooms and baths, and we enjoyed the island via shuttle taxis, going to the casino there each night. We also really enjoyed the resort and the many wonderful restaurants on the island. Marvelous people! Great "Bahama Mamas" which we bought from the activities director by the gallon! We will never forget that trip. We have enjoyed RCI since subscribing in July 1986, over 25 years ago!!!

Westwind II Club

This photo was taken from our lanai at our favorite resort in Nassau, Bahamas. Ocean is exquisite and is a 1 minute walk from door to water's edge. With a casino next door and more restaurants than you can visit within walking distance or short cab ride, you can do as much or as little as you want.

Mexico Puerto Penasco

One fabulous week, definitely too short. I almost want to keep this resort quiet so that it won't be too difficult to find accommodations the next time. The resort was still being developed but even so, it was great. The staff couldn't have been more friendly and helpful, from check-in to check-out. The restaurants, Swedish massage, pool, activities for youngsters as well as adults, everything was really well thought out and most enjoyable. We had the 2 bedroom suite, which was large, light, sufficiently equipped and well maintained. Isabel, our daily maid was super helpful even though my Spanish was worse than her English. The beach I'm leaving for last - Wow - the water was warm and clear and there were hardly any waves. The rocks had been removed for some distance out and all there was, was sand, sand, and more sand. Oh yes and lots and lots of shells. What a great place to vacation. I'm not a golfer, but there's a beautiful golf course right along the ocean. Before leaving, friends had told us that it was too dangerous to go to Mexico - I am so very glad that we didn't listen. I would hate to have missed out on this fabulous treat.

Cancun Vacation

We have timeshare accommodations in Cozumel which we hadn't been to in several years. We wanted to get back to Mexico this year and thought we'd give Cancun a shot. We always thought Cancun would be too wild for our taste, but we were wrong and pleasantly surprised! We stayed at a beautiful all-inclusive resort on the ocean and it was fantastic. There were no bugs, the beach was perfect, the activities were lots of fun, and the people were terrific! It was safe and clean and friendly and we'd go back in a second! I can't speak for the rest of the country, but the Yucatan Peninsula area is fantastic.

Puerto Vallarta

We have been traveling to Puerto Vallarta every year since 1992. It is picturesque with its lush landscapes, plus there are friendly people and great restaurants to try. The beach is outstanding and we love our resort Lindo Mar where we watch the waves breaking over the rocks where the Sierra Madre meets the ocean. Great snorkeling and swimming. The Romantic Zone (Old Vallarta) has markets, parasailing and beach-side eateries. You will be pleasantly surprised.

Anchorage Resort and Yacht Club, Key Largo, Florida

It was the first time we exchanged and it was the best! Loved the Keys. We drove to Key West from our resort – only a 2.5 hour drive – and saw all the Keys on our way down and back. Very doable in one day, but next time, we will plan an overnight stay to get the full Key West experience. We found great out-of- the-way restaurants and really enjoyed the Harry Harris Park – not a fishing park, but great for walking and watching the ocean. We also loved Bahia Honda State Park. Worth the trip! Best part of our stay was sitting on our balcony – watching the dolphins every morning and enjoying a glass of wine and watching the beautiful sunsets every evening. We are already planning our next exchange. Would highly recommend this resort!

Virginia Beach 2009

This summer, we visited Virginia Beach as a family. We thought we were going to have to stay at a military base, as we had not planned ahead and made other accommodations. Just for giggles, my husband searched for an RCI affiliated resort and found one that was right on the beach. Ocean Sands was an older place, but it was right at the center of all the activity. The room was cozy and had everything we needed. The resort had a wonderful pool, and lots of activities. Best of all, we could walk right out of our resort onto the beach, or across the street to literally dozens of shops and restaurants. We were very excited and pleased that this resort became available, and it just goes to show you that you can never tell if you will find something at the last minute, or not!

Complete Peace

Two years ago I went on vacation by myself at Palm Beach Shores Resort and Vacation Villas. Ah, freedom to be completely selfish with my time, energy and thoughts. I rented a car for a day and stocked up on fresh seafood, great bread and yes, butter, and all my favorite veggies and wine. The rest of the week I walked the beach or sat at the pool, talked to new people or stuck my nose in a book. Sometimes I just sat and stared out at the beautiful and amazing ocean. It was the most relaxing week ever.

Hilton Head Island Sept. 2009

My trip to Hilton Head was wonderful. I took two friends that had retired from teaching. That's why we went in September after school had started. The weather was super the whole week. We toured the island by car, swam in the ocean and the resort pool, and enjoyed the great restaurants there. We also went to nearby Beaufort and took a delightful horse-and-carriage ride through the historic area. Another day we went to Savannah for a day of touring that city.

All in all we all had a very special time and plan to return in a couple of years. Thanks RCI for a really great exchange!

Hilton Head 2007

My trip to Hilton Head was better than expected. We stayed at the Island Links Resort and had a very spacious 3 bedroom unit. We enjoyed the resort and were able to bike to the ocean. We explored the entire island on bikes. We were even able to tour both Savannah and Charleston which are both within driving distance. Overall we had a great time at the resort, at the beach, exploring the entire island and traveling to nearby historic destinations. I would recommend this trip to others.
