“The highest use of capital is not to make more money, but to make money do more for the betterment of life.”

Andrew BThe title of my blog, a quote from Henry Ford (1863-1947), is one that I feel represents Christel House and those who support it. My name is Andrew, and I am a paralegal in the North American, Wyndham Exchange & Rentals (WER) Legal Team. Upon joining the WER team in 2011, I became more aware of the rich history of RCI, Christel De Haan, and her charity efforts through Christel House. To those unaware, Christel House is a non-profit organization that provides education, food, and other assistance to over three thousand children globally. When the option was presented to me to serve as a team leader, representing WER Legal during Christel House Week last year (a fundraising week we hold each year here in our New Jersey office) , I accepted the challenge. Upon meeting Daniel and Archana, students of Christel House, I knew I made the right choice.

While shy at first, both Daniel and Archana opened up to us about their experiences at Christel House: the long journey by train that they took from their respective homes in India to the Christel House campus in Bangalore, India; the art and music classes that they loved; and even the things that they missed back at home while they were away furthering their education. The passion Daniel and Archana revealed for Christel House, and the opportunities it provided them, were unscripted and impassioned.

On the fun side of things, our human resources department, other Christel House Week leaders, Becky (a director at Christel House) and myself, escorted the Daniel and Archana on a day trip to New York City, aka the Big Apple. To see NYC through the eyes of children who’ve never seen high rise buildings, fast paced cabs and the architectural beauty of the Brooklyn Bridge, was priceless. In my time with Daniel and Archana, I came to understand what Christel House means to me: it’s about helping every child we come in contact with, be it through a kind word, time or the funds we help raise for Christel House. I look forward to being involved with Christel House Week in 2013 and I hope you are as well.
