My wife and I have always enjoyed getting away to Newport, Rhode Island for a long weekend to unwind and get away from the daily grind. If you don’t know much about Newport, it’s a city nestled between New York and Boston with a rich history dating back to the Revolutionary War. It’s also home to the America’s Cup match races.
In Newport, you can get a unique glimpse into the Gilded Age in America. While visiting this city, a must is to take a look at the mansions on Bellevue – they are breathtaking. To think of these as summer cottages for tycoons like the Vanderbilt family is just mind blowing. We always enjoy the 3.5 mile walk along the “Cliff Walk” where you can experience the beauty of the ocean and architecture of the mansions.
Now that we have children, we go to the beaches, take boat rides, go seal watching, ride the scenic train the goes past the naval base and window shop on Thames Street. We especially like going around the holidays. The entire town is transformed into a winter wonderland that will create memories that last a lifetime.
I personally think that Newport is a place everyone should visit at least once. But be careful… you may get hooked and go back for years to come, just like me.
This week on the RCI Blog, we will be sharing Rhode Island stories and photos from other RCI subscribing members. Don’t forget to come back and take a look!
