I visited Key West for the first time since I was a young child in the 1960's. I have dreamed of going back ever since my last visit. My sister and I stayed at The Galleon Resort in the heart of Old Key West which is right along the water. We had a fantastic view out over the water and of the magnificent Key West sunsets. The resort and staff were fantastic. Some highlights of our trip were the day tour we took by boat to the Dry Tortugas National Park, visiting the Hemingway Home and Museum, going to the Key West Butterfly and Nature Conservatory, shopping, and dining out. Key West is well worth the visit. Many get there on a cruise ship for a few hours, but you cannot beat spending a week there. The people are very friendly and helpful. There is Wi-Fi all over the island. We rented a car from the Miami International Airport, but once we were in Key West, we never used the car. It would be worth the flight directly into Key West and a shuttle to the resort unless you want to enjoy the almost 4 hour drive through the Keys as we did.
