Seapoint - Cape Town (week1)

What an amazing week we had in Seapoint - Cape Town (week1)

What an amazing week we had in Seapoint! The resort was fantastic, could not do more to be helpful. One evening we sent my daughter down to ask if someone could open a bottle of wine for us as we had no corkscrew - she returned with the bottle opened and in a silver bucket of ice!
We did not need a car - the resort shuttle service was better than any we have ever experienced before in our 21 years of timeshare ownership!
The highlight of our week was Table mountain, I did the trip up in less than 10 minutes by cable car, my husband and daughter age 11, did the 3 hour climb to the top. The views were amazing.

RCI celebrates 37 years!

Phil B. - Timeshare Exchange and Resort Vacation NewsThis week marks the 37th anniversary of RCI. 37 years! We have definitely come a long way since 1974, when our exchange requests were kept on index cards! Since then we have reached so many milestones, some of them including the launch of the resort directory (1975), our website (1996), the RCI Points® program (2000), and Enhanced Search Online (2008). And during the last year alone, we introduced the RCI Points Platinum® membership tier, enhancements to the RCI Weeks program with more transparency, and a bunch of ways to stay connected with RCI in social media including a Facebook page, a YouTube channel, a Twitter handle, an iPhone® app, and this blog. And trust me, there will be more to add to this list this year!

First of all, we’ve already launched a cool new version of our “Share Your Vacation” Facebook app. This version allows you to compete against your friends and other users and to earn fun online trophies – all based on the information you enter about vacations (you can check out the app on our Facebook page by clicking on the “App” tab). Also, the RCI app is now available on your iPad® (with the RCI Affiliated Resort Directory, RCI TV and RCI SnapBook features) and you will see the Endless Vacation® magazine app for the iPad in a few weeks! This is just the tip of the iceberg. There’s so much more to come as we continue to completely transform your timeshare experience.

This week on the RCI blog, we’ll be sharing stories and photos with you from RCI subscribing members who traveled to celebrate an anniversary. Be sure to check back. And if you have an anniversary story of your own, please feel free to share it by commenting below.

Las Vegas/Grand Canyon 2009

I used my timeshare exchange to take my family to Las Vegas (my daughter, son-in-law and grandkids). It was so thrilling to see the excitement on their faces and hearing their reactions. They had never been there and no idea it was so beautiful and exciting. We stayed at the Grandview at Las Vegas. WHAT A GREAT RESORT. Location was terrific. Away from the hustle bustle of the strip but close to everything. Shopping, restaurants and a new casino right next door...We took day trips and drove to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. Another EXCITING DAY.

I have been an RCI member for many years but always went with friends..One of the best things for me this time was to be able to see my family enjoy the BEST vacation they have ever had. Thanks to RCI and the opportunity to be able to exchange my resort for any place I want to go...They are always helpful...Thanks for giving me the change to let others know...

Las Vegas Trip 2009

We went to Las Vegas and stayed at the Grand Desert Resort. The accommodations were super. The room (large king size bed), large Jacuzzi tub, large bathroom, living area with dining room, and equipped kitchen were awesome. The resort had an adult and a family pool, great food and we even used the work out room. We utilized the outside hot tub every morning. The area was so pretty and clean. We were close to the strip but it was so great to get away from the hustle and bustle and have some quiet time. The free shuttle was clean, air conditioned and believe it or not ON TIME!!

The only thing that would have made this trip better would have been to win some money! I love my timeshare. It has enabled me to stay in places I would have never stayed and travel much more often. The quality vacations I have gotten to take because of RCI have been numerous. I can't wait to plan my next trip!

Arizona 2009

Last year we went with my parents to Cornville, Arizona. It was the best timeshare we had exchanged for. Very well laid-out and great pool for the grandkids to play with their Granna and Papa. We saw great Indian ruins, the Grand Canyon, relaxed, hiked in Sedona, and enjoyed the warm weather away from the cold Alaska winter. Thanks to RCI for providing great resorts!

Branson, Missouri

My husband's family is scattered all over the country. Our reunions always consisted of gathering at someone's house where we were all crowded together...I suggested timesharing instead. Since we had several weeks deposited, I was able to arrange, through our own resort and RCI, for each family to have their own timeshare condo in Branson. We all had a wonderful time and it has become a tradition to have our reunions this way. Several family members have since purchased their own timeshares.

Stone Ridge Resort in N. Idaho

In 2005 we purchased a Last CallSM week for Stone Ridge in N. Idaho. Our first trip to N. Idaho. We were worried about what we would do for a week in such a remote (we thought) area. Well a week is not enough! The resort offered day trips to explore the area plus activities everyday and a wonderful indoor recreation center plus a 19 hole golf course which was only $25 that first year which included a cart and a bag of range balls. Lake Coeur d'Alene is a quick drive to the south and to the north Lake Pend Oreille and Priest Lake and so much more all around.

We continued to return each fall, bringing family and friends, either through exchanges, Last Call vacations or Extra VacationsSM getaways. Being just a seven hour drive from Portland, we planned a family reunion with 19 of us in six units. That year two of us picked up weeks through RCI and then rented two through the rental pool. We will continue to visit this beautiful area. Last Call weeks provide the opportunity to explore out-of-the-way places without the financial investment. We are again using Last Call vacations this month to pick up a week to add to our own timeshare in Puerto Vallarta. Thank you RCI.

Timeshares and Family Reunions Go Hand in Hand

Karen P. - RCI Social Media and Marketing NewsI attended my first family reunion 3 years ago and I have to say, it was an experience I will never forget. It was located in the heart of the Poconos in Pennsylvania, and members of my extended family (including a famous magician, who shall remain anonymous!) traveled from across the country to spend a weekend together. Looking back on all of the preparation that went into that weekend, I can definitely see how owning a timeshare can make the planning of a family reunion both easy and fun.

Keep reading our blog this week to see stories from RCI subscribing members who have planned family reunions themselves using their exchanges through RCI. There was even a family that coordinated a reunion for 23 people!

Do you have a story about a family reunion at an RCI affiliated resort? If so, please share your story here!

Dan The RCI Guy Takes on Marbella, Spain

Dan "The RCI Guy" - Vacation Travels with RCI TV's Dan "The RCI Guy"I never get tired of visiting Spain. It is a beautiful country that can differ greatly by region. Recently, I stayed in Marbella on the southern coast while attending a conference where resort developers from around Europe come together to discuss the latest trends - which is why I attended this conference…to talk a bit about RCI TV. As a timeshare owner myself, I have to say that Marbella is where I want to exchange into next.

Marbella is built around a beautiful bay with sandy beaches and soft winds that come off the Mediterranean Sea. The mountains rise sharply as you travel inland and one of the areas you really should check out is the historic city of Ronda. It has an awesome Roman aqueduct and bridge that ushers you into its gates. There's plenty of shopping and eating to be done... or just spend your time exploring! In fact, one of the videos on RCI TV features Ronda - check it out on the Destination Reviews online channel on RCI TV.

Have you ever visited Marbella or another city in Spain? What was your favorite part? Comment below and tell me about it!

AZ for Xmas

All five of us - myself, my husband and our three children ranging in ages from 17-10; went to Arizona for Christmas in 2008. We stayed at the Camelback Resort. I have to say we had a wonderful time. There was so much to do driving and hiking on the scenic trails. Swimming in December was the best and it was the last year my daughter was traveling with us due to her college plans. So it was very important to me that everyone was happy with our choices of activities. We had the great weather, interesting shops to explore and wonderful staff at the resort.

The next week we spent New Year's Eve in Sedona at another RCI affiliated timeshare. Just when I thought things couldn't get better it did. We had the same great experience at the resort and the beauty of our surroundings. We did a jeep tour, went to the Grand Canyon and explored the area. We even saw fireworks on New Year's Eve at a local Casino on a Native American Reservation. I think this was an example of a great itinerary and perfect timing. All the kids had a blast and we were extremely happy with our choice of places to explore during the holidays.

Our Goal…High Fives By The Pool!

Phil B. - Timeshare Exchange and Resort Vacation NewsA few months ago, I blogged about the fun and exciting tools we created to help you learn about RCI and our affiliated resorts. Well, we are adding to the list!

We recently launched an RCI Facebook page and Twitter account (we're @RCI_Timeshare) and we’re also planning big additions to our RCI app for the iPhone®. All of these are fantastic ways to stay in touch with RCI, but Facebook and Twitter are great ways to meet and interact with other RCI subscribing members. Which brings me to today’s topic: What are we trying to accomplish with all this social and online stuff?

Simply stated, we’re giving you more useful information in a setting where you can hear from other folks who love to travel. I love the idea of creating a tight-knit community of RCI members who share travel ideas and tips and wish each other well on vacation travels. I can see a day where someone may spot an RCI hat or beach towel at one of our affiliated resorts, and approach that person and say, “Hey, are you an RCI member? So am I!” (This is where the high five comes in.) “This is my wife. How is your vacation going? Have you tried the spa yet?”

So jump into Facebook and Twitter and start hanging out with others who are passionate about travel. While doing so, you’ll find fun and informative updates from RCI – like vacation tips, polls, trivia, updates on our affiliated resorts, and suggestions on FS2D (Fun Stuff to Do) when visiting destinations.

But more importantly, you’ll see what other members are saying about their trips and you can post your own suggestions and tips. And the best part of our Facebook page? Our new app called Share Your Vacation by RCI! It lets you plot all of your vacations on a map and see where your Facebook friends have been. Or, you can just see where other RCI members are traveling to get an idea of where the new hot spots are. Now that’s cool!

If you like hearing from RCI, but prefer to keep it short and sweet (like 140 characters or less short and sweet), then follow us on Twitter.

And by all means, if you’re at one of our affiliated resorts and hear someone talking about RCI, introduce yourself and jump into the conversation. And give them a high five!

New England 2008

New England has always been one of the top places we've wanted to visit in the fall. Last year with the help of RCI, we were able to make our dream come true! We traded our timeshare for one at the VILLAGE OF LOON MOUNTAIN LODGES in Lincoln, New Hampshire at the end of September through the beginning of October. It was the perfect location that allowed us to drive near the resort and also farther away to see so much of the area and the autumn beauty. One of my favorite highlights was visiting the home of the great American poet Robert Frost. His work has been so inspiring to me and being able to walk through his home, stroll the grounds and see the view of the New Hampshire mountains that he saw made me feel like I knew him just a little bit better. With a view like his, it's not hard to understand why he was such an amazing writer with so much inspiration, right in front of him. We also traveled to the Lake Winnepesaukee region where one of my favorite movies, "On Golden Pond" was filmed. On other days, we took drives to see the Ben & Jerry's ice cream factory and the VonTrapp Lodge in Vermont, as well as driving many of the scenic highways in the area to take in the gorgeous natural surroundings.

Vermont Trip

We booked a vacation to Vermont in 2000 to see the leaves change colors. We stayed at Smugglers Notch and had a great time. Even though our timeshare in Cancun was for 1 bedroom, we were booked in a 3 bedroom unit at the resort. The scenery was breathtaking. We had a great time.

Cayman Islands 2009

Grand Cayman Island is one of my favorite places in the caribbean to visit. This was my 3rd trip where I utilized my RCI membership to trade into a wonderful timeshare. We stayed at Morritts Tortuga on the east end of the island. The resort was wonderful, the water tempature was 86 degrees and the diving and snorkeling were fantastic. The island has certainly bounced back from hurricane Ivan and is thriving more than ever. Don't miss the Dolphin Discovery if you have kids. My 7 yr old loved the experience of swimming and riding on a dolphin. The new Turtle Farm offers the opportunity of spending the day inside the farm and swimming and snorkeling with the turtles. There are great bargains in Georgetown, only suggest shopping when the cruise ships are not in town, otherwise way too crowded. If you have never been to the Cayman Islands I would put it on my list of places not to miss. We hope to go back in 4 years, when we can trade again through RCI.

Cape Caribe, Cocoa Beach, FL 2009

As new members of RCI, this was our first time using our timeshare. This past June, the day after school let out for the summer, we packed our bags and headed north 3 hours to Ron Jon's Cape Caribe Resort in Cocoa Beach, Florida. Our vacation was wonderful from start to finish. My kids loved everything about it, from the lazy river and the waterslide, to exploring next door at Jetty Park where we saw stingrays, turtles, crabs, starfish and more. We were able to watch movies, go to the game room, play many of the activities that the resort offers and Mom and Dad were able to get massages, right there at the resort. We are proud to be members of RCI and can't wait to see where 2010 will take us....

Dan the RCI Guy: Off to Asia!

Dan "The RCI Guy" - Vacation Travels with RCI TV's Dan "The RCI Guy"On my way to Asia — for the first time!

Traveling has been a part of my job description for the past 20 years. And while I have been to dozens of different countries and to every state in the U.S., I have never been anywhere in Asia…until now!

I'm packing my bags and heading off to Bangkok, Thailand and Nha Trang, Vietnam to film a beautiful timeshare resort and to film another episode of our RCI® TV travel show, "New Ways to Play." The travel show will take place in Bangkok and the timeshare resort is on an island off the coast of Nha Trang. Villas overlook the sea and have their own plunge pool right outside your door. They have a renowned spa and feature ancient, traditional Far East massage treatments. Sounds perfect to me!

In Bangkok, we are going to meet up with one of the city’s most famous tailors to have him make my own custom silk suit in just 24 hours (I've been told I clean up fairly well). We're also taking a bicycle tour of the city with a company whose name says it all: "Grasshopper Adventures."

I've always admired the rich history of the many cultures that make up Asia and I cannot wait to experience a part of two of them in the coming weeks. What places have you visited in Asia? Any tips you can give me for my travels? Or timeshare locations you can recommend? Please comment below to let me know!

California Vacation: More than Just a Summer Timeshare Destination

Susie M. - RCI Subscribing Member Vacation ExperiencesIn my position here at RCI, I get to hear directly from subscribing members about their timeshare vacation experiences. A lot of our RCI® subscribing members choose a California vacation for one reason or another, especially in the winter. They talk about the beaches, the wineries, and the good weather — a great combination to warm up any winter. Some of them are planning a stay at a timeshare for a wedding, honeymoon, or anniversary. Some of them are just planning for some time away. Here’s what other RCI members had to say* about their California vacation:

Robert, Palmdale, CA: Our trip to Arnold, California in March was awesome. The Big Trees State Park was just down the road and the kids went snowboarding 20 minutes away. Lots of hiking and fishing. The nearest lake was gorgeous and we saw lots of wildlife. People in the town were really friendly and helpful. The resort was comfy and had a warm feel to it. We want to return there.

Joyce, Salem, NH: My husband and I were excited to plan our exchange trip to Capistrano California.  We exchanged our Cape Cod timeshare for a beautiful two bedroom, two bath timeshare in the Capistrano Surfside Inn. The timeshare was huge and immaculate and the ocean was just across the street.  Also within walking distance was Dante Point which not only had an active harbor and walking areas with fantastic restaurants and shops, but bikepaths as well for those who wanted to bike around the area.  We visited The Mission at Capistrano and walked the small streets with many unique shops.  We chose this place to have a restful holiday and it was, yet there was plenty to do if we chose to do so.  I would highly recommend this paradise area to anyone who wants to vacation in California.  We would definitely visit again, but there are so many beautiful resorts with RCI, we want to try them all.  We love RCI and the wonderful opportunities it offers us in trying new places and seeking new adventures.

Christine, San Bernardino, CA: In the summer of 2007, my husband and I experienced the most wonderful, relaxing vacation week that we have ever had. We decided to stay at WorldMark Angels Camp, California. During the day, we spent time visiting a couple of local wineries and sightseeing. In the evening, we barbecued dinner, relaxed, and escaped the reality of everyday stresses. It was a wonderfully simple and non-hurried vacation and we are looking forward to getting away again in the future!!

Italy: A Lot of History and A Lot to Do!

Susie M. - RCI Subscribing Member Vacation ExperiencesWho hasn’t dreamed of visiting Italy, even if it's just for a short while? Picture it: lounging in the espresso shops, reading by one of the fountains, dining al fresco with friends, taking a break for gelato…

Some RCI subscribing members have already enjoyed a vacation rental or timeshare exchange vacation in Italy and everything the country has to offer. Since my position at RCI allows me to hear from members about their European vacations, I thought I’d share a few stories* with you:

Larry, Olympia, WA: Last May, when we arrived at Il Poggio, our first week’s stay, it was 9:50 p.m. The resort office closed at 10 p.m., and we were worried we wouldn’t make it. We had a stressful drive from the Rome airport, and were hungry and tired. Il Poggio is located in a small town in Tuscany, and by that time of night, the few stores and eateries were closed. The owner graciously sent a tray of salami, cheese, and bread to our room, and it was even enough for breakfast the next morning. We thoroughly enjoyed our week there, followed by a lovely week on Sardinia, and another week in northern Tuscany.

George, El Cajon, CA: Our trip to Italy was fantastic. We went from Assisi to Sicily. All four weeks were with our RCI weeks. Assisi and Tropea were our favorite. This was a chance for my wife to explore her roots in Sicily and we had a great time with long lost family. Thanks RCI.

Richard, Monroe Township, NJ: Just got back from a wonderful week in Montegrotto Terme. We were a 10-minute train ride from Padua and a 60-minute train ride from Venice. The property was wonderful and located near the train station. The hotel staff was great and the room was immaculate. The town’s shops were very good for browsing and shopping. The food on the half-board was very good and we would return to this property again.

Now it's your turn! Do you have any experiences from your trip to Italy you’d like to share? If so, comment below.

Canyons, Hiking, Beautiful Scenery and More… All on an Arizona Vacation!

Susie M. - RCI Subscribing Member Vacation ExperiencesThree years ago, my family planned a winter vacation to sunny Sedona, Arizona. We bought our Red Rock Pass and picked up a trail map from the local Chamber of Commerce, then we hiked, and hiked, and hiked, each trail offering more adventure and more scenery than the last. We all enjoyed the area immensely, hiking, shopping, dining, and enjoying the fabulous resort pool and hot tub to our hearts’ content.

Making the most of our timeshare travel, we’ve visited Las Vegas, Washington, D.C., even Disney during our winter vacations, but this is the area we like to return to the most. We’re not alone in our adoration of Arizona! At my job with RCI, I am fortunate to hear vacation stories from our RCI subscribing members. Here’s what other timeshare owners had to say* about their Sedona resort vacations:

Linda, Wilmington, NC: We absolutely loved our trip to Arizona. We stayed in Sedona for the week. It is impossible to describe or photograph how beautiful it was. It was also our base for the Grand Canyon, Painted Desert, Petrified Forest and Page Canyon. What a wonderful week. We will return to this destination.

Alan, Ankeny, IA: Wanting to take a great winter vacation, my wife and I invited a couple to go with us to Sedona, Arizona. It was February and we found the weather to be great jacket weather. It was warm enough to golf and reasonably priced golf courses were found. Our condo exchange was the most beautiful we ever had and had a small lock-out unit attached which was wonderful for two couples. The scenery was beautiful and we really enjoyed the vacation.

Elaine, Milford, CT: Sedona, Arizona, is a dream destination. We have used our timeshare there several times, and never cease to marvel at the natural rock formations and of course the people. Best adventure is the side trip to Grand Canyon close by — don’t miss it!

Robert, Galt, CA: Our trip to Sedona, Arizona, was one of the funniest and most relaxing vacations we have taken in the 20+ years we have been members of RCI. Stayed at Sedona Summit, a great place. Each day we explored the area seeing some of the most beautiful scenery, Indian ruins, red rocks, beautiful homes, interesting rock formations, and talking to the locals about the area. The entire trip was one of awe. Fortunately, we had fantastic weather. We had the time of our lives.
