The Snows of Summit County: Keystone

Keystone

Veer south off the interstate at Dillon, and the first ski town you reach is Keystone. Its River Run base area looks as if it had been custom-made for an easy, low-stress vacation—which, in fact, it was. In its car-free village, condos and restaurants are clustered around pavilions and cobbled walkways. Families clomp around in ski boots, sprawl beside fire pits and soak up the brilliant Rocky Mountain sunshine at the Kickapoo Tavern.

Across the Snake River, the River Run gondola quietly whisks skiers and snowboarders to the summit of 11,640-foot Dercum Mountain. While its Area 51 terrain park is fairly challenging, the signature front slopes will please beginners and intermediates with their mellow groomed runs.

But first impressions can be misleading. Keystone encompasses 3 peaks; the challenge increases as you work your way south from Dercum. North Peak offers some steeper cruising and long thigh-burning mogul runs. The Outback hides stashes of powder and nice lines threading through spruce forest.

Enticing snowy bowls gape above North Peak and the Outback like hanging glaciers. Follow the locals trudging to the 12,000-foot ridge above, or hop on the Outback Shuttle, where five bucks gets you a snowcat ride to the top.

When you’re spent, it’s easy to skip the end-of-the-day crowds skiing back to the base. Keystone thoughtfully has strung a second gondola from Dercum Mountain to North Peak, so you’re just two relaxing gondola rides away from après ski.

Terrific Time at Tamaracks

The Tamarack Resort was a beautiful resort community with lovely accommodations. The condos felt like luxury townhomes with bedrooms upstairs and the living quarters on the first level. My family had the best time using the on-site amenities like the fitness center, swimming pools, and racquetball courts. We barbequed right outside of our condo and enjoyed the spacious kitchen and living room. My husband and I had a great time, and our children were just in heaven because there were endless activities between the Dells' waterparks and the fun at the Tamaracks Resort. We are so thankful to RCI for providing these wonderful vacations for our family to enjoy.

Family Vacation to Kauai

In May 2011, our family of eight enjoyed a trip of a lifetime to Kauai, Hawaii. We were celebrating our daughter's birthday, our anniversary and Mother's Day. We had a fantastic time at the Wyndham Kauai Beach Villas. The two units we had accommodated all of us very comfortably and the location was superb. Besides enjoying the pool and the beautifully landscaped gardens at the condo, we also enjoyed visiting several beaches, the Waimea Canyon, the Spouting Horn, Wailua Falls and Opaeka'a Falls. One of the highlights of our visit was the helicopter ride we booked through the condo. It took us over the Na Pali Coast and the Waimea Canyon, into an extinct volcano and over several majestic waterfalls. What awesome memories! We'd love to go back!

Pagosa Springs Trip

We needed a week away, so reserved a Last CallSM vacation in Pagosa Springs. Although we've lived in Denver for more than 40 years, we had never been to that part of Colorado. We spent the week seeing the area, relaxing in the Pagosa Hot Springs, riding the train in Durango, and just relaxing at the condo.

The Pagosa Hot Springs have several pools with varying temperatures and beautiful views over the river. The train from Durango was an experience! We got a chance to see and feel what travelling in the 19th century was like. You smell the coal and feel and hear the "click, click" of the train as it wound through the beautiful scenery. The accommodations at Wyndham Pagosa were perfect for relaxation. Our unit was located on their golf course. We enjoyed interacting with the golfers, and (quietly) judging their shots.

Overall a great relaxing week.

Glacier National Park

We stayed at Meadow Lake Golf and Ski Resort in a one-bedroom on a golf course. Every day we had breakfast in our condo, packed our lunches, and then drove 15 miles to the entrance of Glacier National Park, where we hiked different hikes with park rangers and on our own. it was a very memorable vacation.

Kauai 2007

We took a great trip to Kauai in 2007 and combined a vacation with a private wedding. It was great. Weddings can be stressful but not ours. We had a 2 yr old and 17 year old, stayed in a great 2 bedroom condo and had plenty of space for all of us. We were married on the beach, had a private catered dinner on the beach, photos too. We took surfing lessons, hiked and went to a luau. No stress for us--just great memories and great photos.

Smugglers' Notch 2003

My husband and I finally had the opportunity to get away from the kids, so we looked into one of the Last CallSM vacations on RCI. Because it was mid-October, we were interested in seeing the changing colors of autumn. We live in L.A. and aren't really aware of it as much as when you are back east because there are so many trees. We were pleasantly surprised at Smugglers' Notch Resort when we arrived, and we were given a 1200 square foot condo, overlooking the valley below. Our room had a kitchen, full size dining room, living room, 3 bedrooms and 2 baths! Incredible! We visited the small little towns nearby and went on a tour at the Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream Factory. My favorite was swimming in the heated full sized pool WHILE IT WAS SNOWING! What a joy! Being from Southern California, we don't get that. When we were in Vermont, some days it was just regular beautiful fall weather. A couple of days it rained lightly and snowed lightly twice two other days. We had a lovely fireplace in our room. It was cozy and fun for just the two of us as we snuggled up and watched movies we had rented and ate our popcorn. Lovely!

Trip to Mont Tremblant

It was a trip organized to celebrate my daughter's eighth grade graduation. There were 10 of us who traveled by mini-bus from Providence, RI to Mt. Tremblant. We stayed in a beautiful condominium along the side of a mountain and overlooking a lake. Nights and early mornings were spent on the deck enjoying the view. The village of Mt. Tremblant was a short distance away and it was like visiting a village in the Alps. Montreal was about an hour's ride away and we spent a day there also. One of my happiest memories was seeing the entire group sitting around the table to have dinner and then playing cards or games until late into the evening. One night, we decided to make grilled pizza, so we rolled out the dough and coated it in oil. Then, using the gas grills that were located outside our front door, we began to first cook the dough, and then cover and cook the pizzas. Some young college kids were staying in the unit above us. They came down to see what we were cooking and their eyes opened wide. They had the usual, burgers and hot dogs. So, to be neighborly, we gave them some pizzas to enjoy. They were so appreciative, they brought us down some beer to enjoy with ours. It was great sharing with them. Without the wonderful condo accommodations, this would not be possible. This was one of my favorite vacations.

Disney World

My family lives close to Disneyland in California, so we never were very interested in visiting Walt Disney World in Florida. But the kids suggested it as a family vacation idea, and we started to look into lodging options. We exchanged our week and stayed at the Orange Lake West Village in Kissimmee. It was beautiful. The condo was fully equipped with two bedrooms, two baths and a full kitchen. They had a gorgeous pool area with several swimming pools, slides and a lazy river to float around. It was super-close to all the attractions of Orlando: Disney's Animal Kingdom, Universal Studios and Sea World, to name a few. We concentrated on the theme parks that we don't have here in Southern California, like Epcot, Sea World's Aquatica and Universal's Islands of Adventure. We had a great time and would definitely go back-- but only if we stay at a luxurious RCI affiliated resort.

Rio Grande Valley

My trip to Fort Brown Condos in Brownsville, TX was nothing less than glorious--semi-tropical weather, located next to the international bridge, adjacent to the beautiful University of Texas - Brownsville campus. Great amenities were a bonus. But, I have to say the natural setting was the most remarkable. The first evening there, we went out for a walk and as we crossed the bridge over the Resaca, we saw what we believed to be someone's pet parrot that had likely escaped its cage. As we followed its flight, we saw numerous of these 'escaped pets.' It didn't take long to realize that, in fact, this was a natural population of brilliant green parrots nesting in the breeze-inspired dancing palm trees. Every evening thereafter, we took our post-dinner walk and enjoyed watching the parrots and a host of other aviary delights: ducks, herons, geese, and gulls, to name a few. This RCI affiliated property is a veritable paradise for bird watchers and nature lovers, and yes, for those of us who simply love to collect great vacation memories.

Canyon Lake Texas

We just returned from a wonderful stay at Silverleaf Hill Country Resort in Canyon Lake, Texas.

We just returned from a wonderful stay at Silverleaf Hill Country Resort in Canyon Lake, Texas. There were wild deer (or not so wild) near our building every day. I put in a request early with the resort to be placed on the same side of the FM hwy 306 as the amenities since we had children with us. Not only did they follow thru with the request but they put us in the Presidentials nearest to the lake with beautiful views. We also had our own pool there so we did not have to go up to the main area every time for the kids to swim. Staff was very friendly & helpful. Condos very clean & modern. Beds were 'very' comfortable & I have a Select Comfort bed at home. We rented a ski boat & Jet ski one day at the Marina...very nice on the water. Had 2 road trips to San Antonio & it wasn't too bad a drive. Overall this was a GREAT vacation spot!!

Oregon 2006

This was one of the most fabulous vacations ever! And we've had many... My husband, myself and our 15 year old daughter stayed in Newport Beach, Oregon in October. The weather was unbelievable, the scenery gorgeous and we had the best time ever exploring, crabbing and touring lighthouses. One of our highlights was (know this sounds crazy) finding an Arctic Circle drive-in! With fry sauce! And a Taco Time (not Bell--Time) We're from Utah prior to AZ and miss those places... Our daughter absolutely loved the crabbing experience. It was a hoot!! Flinging crabs off her gloves and waiting for the prize keeper. We enjoyed a tasty crab dinner that night in our very spacious 2 bedroom condo that was right on the coast. It was a magnificent vacation and gave us wonderful bonding time. We still talk about it and have fabulous pictures to remember it by.

Trip to France

Going to France was a life long desire. RCI made it really happen for me. I could not afford the hotel bill for a weeks stay in Paris but with the assistance of RCI I was able to secure a wonderful Condo unit 10 minutes from Paris and all of the sites that I could only read about or see in TV. What a delight to have had this opportunity and I owe it all to being a subscribing member in RCI. I have been able to travel to many places over the 24 years of being associated with this wonderful vacation exchange experience.

Hilton Head 2009

We were fortunate enough to visit Hilton Head for the first time through our timeshare using RCI. Our trip was fabulous. The condo was very spacious and had more than what we needed to have an enjoyable week. Our kids enjoyed swimming in the pools. The beach was fantastic and we spent a lot of time riding our bikes along the miles of trails on the island. Thank you for making it possible to experience a wonderful vacation. We look forward to many more!

Sedona, Arizona Trip

Wanting to take a great winter vacation, my husband and I invited a couple to go with us to Sedona, Arizona. It was February and we found the weather to be great jacket weather. It was warm enough to golf and reasonably priced golf courses were found. Our condo exchange was the most beautiful we ever had and had a small lock-out unit attached which was wonderful for two couples. The scenery was beautiful and we really enjoyed the vacation.

Branson 2009

Our trip to Branson was once again a great time had by all. There is so much to do and see there. My husband's whole family met in Branson and we had 2 -3 bedroom condos and they were very nice and close to everything we did. We stayed at the Surry Vacation Resort - Carriage Place. It had an elevator - which was nice as we had one in a wheelchair. This is our 4th time in Branson - and 2nd time for an all family reunion there. We will definitely be going back soon.

Our first "timeshare" vacation

When we first bought our timeshare, like most people, I was a little skeptical. After trading in our week with RCI we started looking for options for our first timeshare exchange vacation. My wife and I settled on a trip to Virginia to see colonial Williamsburg, Jamestown, and Washington D.C. Our exchange went through and a few months later we were headed up on our first "timeshare" vacation. We were still a little hesitant and doubtful about the whole thing. Would this place be a total dump? Had we been taken for a ride? Was the whole timeshare thing a big sham?

All of our questions and doubts were answered when we checked in to our condo at Powhatan Plantation. When we walked into our unit we were pleasantly surprised. This was a million times better than staying in a hotel. We had 2 bedrooms, a hot tub, a living room, kitchen, etc. We had an amazing week of fun and relaxation, and most importantly, time together. We have been huge fans of our timeshare ever since and have enjoyed 13 years of amazing vacations since!

Canary Islands

One year my husband and I decided we wanted to go to the beach in California or Florida. When I called the RCI rep....She said if you want to go to the beach where the Europeans go why don't you try the Canary Islands. I wasn't even sure where the Canary Islands was located but she made it sound so beautiful I said sign us up.

This turned out to be one of the best vacations my husband and I have ever been on. We stayed in a 2 bedroom at the Hollywood Mirage. I invited my mom and 2 of her friends. Since they are senior citizens we said they could stay for free. When they walked into that condo, all 3 of them pulled out $150-200 each and gave it to me and my husband. They said the place was so beautiful and comfortable that they wanted to share in the expense. We have been trying to get back to the Canary Islands but the airfare is the only thing that has kept us from going back.

Thanks to the RCI rep that recommended the Canary Islands. It was a trip of a lifetime. I highly recommend the Hollywood Mirage, each section is named after one of the old Movie Stars. We stayed in the Clark Gable section. There was nightly entertainment. We danced, had very good meals and met so many friendly Europeans. We went to the beach everyday and the scenery is just as pretty as Hawaii.

All I can say is "WOW!" Thank you RCI.

AUSTRALIA Vacation 2008

We stayed in a wonderful condo on the beach in Surfers Paradise, Queensland, Australia. For less than our annual points we had enough room for 6 people and included all the stay-at-home amenities! The resort was awesome - Tiki Village International. Thanks RCI for providing a great resort for us to enjoy on our trip.

Vermont Trip

Our trip began with the expectations of skiing in Vermont and enjoying a wonderful New England ski vacation. Unfortunately the weather didn't cooperate and we were only able to ski for about an hour as there was no snow and Smugglers Notch couldn't make snow faster than the weather was melting it. But this didn't ruin the trip. The resort had other activities that we could utilize and the area was fascinating to explore. We were able to visit the Ben & Jerry's factory and the Vermont Teddy Bear factory. If we'd been skiing we would have missed these great spots. The night time events at Smugglers Notch resort were family oriented and fun to watch. As we'd never been to this part of the country we were able to explore more and even visited an alpaca farm. Beautiful country that we could imagine returning to to actually ski at a future date.

The condo amenities were wonderful, beyond our dreams. Our condo was right across from one of the ski runs and would have made it very nice to walk out the door and jump on a lift and ski down the mountain. The fireplace in the condo was used every night. This was a fabulous trip and we hope to return someday to actually ski.
