On my first trip to the Outer Banks (or OBX) of North Carolina, it didn’t take long to discover why this vacation destination is loved by so many. The Outer Banks has about 80 miles of coastline carpeted with powder-soft sandy beaches perfect for any summer activity. Whether it’s the water sports, relaxing in the cool ocean breezes, or just building a sand castle with the kids, the Outer Banks has it all and it’s right at your door step!
When you’re not working on your tan, go out and explore an area that’s rich in history and natural resources. You can visit the birthplace of modern flight at the Wright Brothers National Memorial in Kill Devil Hill or climb to the top of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse for a great view of the coast. Or head over to Jockey’s Ridge State Park in Nags Head…it has the largest sand dunes on the eastern seaboard and breathtaking views for those who climb the 100-ft. high dune. A must-do activity especially at sunset!
The islands of the Outer Banks are dotted with quaint fishing villages and modern towns alike, from Corolla in the north to Cape Hatteras in the south and places in between like Duck and Kitty Hawk and Nags Head, all with great shops and restaurants to enjoy. The stores range from quirky surf and souvenir shops to fine jewelers and the multitude of restaurants will satisfy any culinary craving, from taco stands to upscale dining at the Black Pelican. Is breakfast your favorite meal of the day? Then don’t miss Duck Donuts! Made fresh everyday and topped with your favorite icings and sprinkles – but get there early because there will be a line!
Even with so many activities to do, you will find that you just can’t help unwinding and taking the day as it comes. We had as much fun flying a kite on the beach or watching the dolphins swim past shore as we’ve had at any amusement park. There’s just something in the air in the OBX, and we found ourselves enchanted by these islands and counting the days until we can return.
We’ll be devoting this entire week to North Carolina on the RCI Blog. Come back to see photos and read stories from RCI subscribing members who have visited the Outer Banks and other great North Carolina destinations. If you have a story or photo of your own to share about North Carolina, click here. We may feature your story or photo at the end of the week!
